How to Count Words and Characters Correctly

“Length” can mean words, visible characters, characters without spaces, lines, or paragraphs. Choose the count that matches the requirement.

Words and characters answer different questions

Word count estimates document length and reading effort. Character count is useful for fields, metadata, captions, identifiers, and systems with strict limits. TextoLab counts Unicode text rather than encoded bytes.

Decide whether spaces belong in the total

Characters including spaces represent everything the reader enters. Characters excluding spaces remove whitespace but keep punctuation. A platform or form may define its limit differently, so check the requirement before editing.

  • Accented letters count as visible characters.
  • Emoji should not be confused with byte length.
  • Line breaks affect lines and paragraphs.
  • Multiple spaces remain characters when spaces are included.

Worked count

The phrase below contains two words. The visible total changes depending on whether the space is included.

Simple example
01

Olá mundo

02

2 words · 9 characters with the space · 8 without the space

Unicode-aware counting treats the accented word as visible text rather than reporting its storage size.

Use counts together

Average words per sentence reveals pacing, while paragraph count describes structure. Reading time converts the word count into an estimate. None of these numbers replaces editorial judgment, but together they make length constraints easier to manage.

Questions about this topic

Is a character the same as a byte?

No. Bytes describe storage; users usually need visible Unicode character counts.

Does punctuation count as a character?

Yes. Character totals include punctuation.

Why might another editor show a different word count?

Applications may use different rules for apostrophes, hyphens, symbols, and special spaces.
